Types of Dentures
Have you recently had a discussion with your dentist about having your teeth extracted due to decay or gum disease? This can be a difficult discussion and you may feel like you are losing your smile. Fortunately, thanks to scientific advances in dental treatments
you have so many tooth replacement options available to you, including dentures. Due to the many different types of dentures in cary nc, there is bound to be one type that will be a perfect fit for you. Below is an explanation of each of the different types of dentures available.
Traditional complete full dentures
When all of the teeth are extracted, a full set of complete dentures can be made to replace all of a patient’s teeth. Traditional full dentures rest on top of the gums and are not anchored to anything in the mouth. Usually, traditional complete dentures are
made and fitted approximately 8-12 weeks after the extraction visit.
Partial dentures
When only some of the teeth are removed, a partial denture prosthetic may be used in addition to the natural teeth. Usually partial dentures are made from both metal and acrylic materials. Together this combination helps the partial dentures fit securely in the mouth. Partial dentures can be removed whenever but help to ensure the other teeth do not shift in the mouth.
Custom dentures
Custom dentures can be made to give you the most natural-looking smile. Usually, custom dentures are made of more expensive materials, like porcelain, and will take several impressions, and fittings to make. Despite the added time they take to make, the result is a set of dentures that fit you perfectly and a smile that is custom, and completely your own.
Immediate dentures
Immediate dentures, also called same day dentures, are designed in advance of the extraction so they can be fit immediately after the extraction is complete. Immediate dentures are not an option for everyone. For those who may be a good candidate, the immediate denture allows the patient to leave the extraction with replacement teeth in place, and no waiting period is required. Also, immediate dentures can expedite the healing process by protecting the gums from any injury. They are an added cost due to the fact that they need to be refitted throughout and after the extraction healing period.
Implant supported dentures
An alternative option is a combination of permanent dental implants and dentures. The dental implant provides a stable support for the dentures to be attached to. This type of denture will be stable and secure, and the dental implant is durable and looks very natural.
Overdentures
An overdenture is a removable type of denture that sits on top of the gums and is also held in place with dental implants. Overdentures can be designed to fit either the upper and/or the lower jaw or both, depending on what is needed.
Economy dentures
The most cost-effective denture option is the economy denture. Economy dentures are not designed or custom made to fit your mouth, but are more generic. Because economy dentures are not designed specifically for the patient they may not fit as securely or comfortably as a conventional permanent denture. If this is the case, denture adhesive may be needed to help avoid gum irritation due to slipping and rubbing.
