More Information on Holly Springs, NC

Holly Springs in a very nice small town in North Carolina that has location, location, location going in its best interests as well as an interesting past. First, the location. Sitting 19 miles southeast of the Raleigh, the state’s capital, and 23 miles south of the Research Triangle Park, it also is only 17 miles east of Jordan Lake. With all the activity in the market area of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill the lake is often overlooked. A brief summary of this added bonus gives you 180 miles of undeveloped shoreline, over 1,000 campsites, seven swimming beaches, mile of trails, deep, clear water providing excellent fishing and boating activities and breathtaking scenery. We’ll come back and visit the recent growth since the addition of the Research Triangle after we look at an illustrious past.

History Builds Character

Holly Springs basically has nine lives. After being founded in the early 1800s next to a fresh water spring the town first saw a general store, a sawmill and then a cotton gin. A Scottish tailor built a 38 room mansion in 1817 which was used extensively during the Civil War by Union troops. The town has bad luck with the wars losing young male residents during the Civil War, during World War I and then again during World War II. The railroad added insult to injury by choosing to go through the neighboring town of Apex leaving Holly Springs looking deserted. But in 1875 a George Alford move his very successful mercantile business to town and that was the revival opportunity it needed. Going into the 1900s the town only had a population of 300 and then again only around 600 residents going into 1960. That’s when the Research Triangle turned the entire market upside down as evident by the over 33,000 residents that call Holly Springs home today.

Revival

In 1959 the local and state governments collaborated on creating the Research Triangle Park. Its sole objective was to keep the new graduates for the three colleges; Duke in Durham, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and North Carolina State in Raleigh from leaving the area. The effort has turned into a huge success! Today you will find over 200 businesses in the Park as well as over 50,000 highly educated, well paid employees. Those folks all need homes and Holly Springs is the benefactor for some.

The community has done a fabulous job in controlling the huge change in its population. It has controlled the growth and still maintained some of that small town charm. To add some frosting to the cake in regards to its location, Holly Springs is only about three hours from the Atlantic Coast and a weekend of fun on the shores. Or, you can pack your bags and head three hours to the west and spend a nice weekend exploring in the Appalachian Mountains. Holly Springs has indeed lived nine lives and now with several small manufacturers in town contributing to the tax base has become a wonderful small town to call home.
