Information on Garner, NC

The Piedmont is basically an elevated plain that sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. Right in the middle of the Piedmont is the Raleigh Durham area and the many surrounding small cities. Garner is one of them. Garner commands a spectacular location not only from the bigger picture mentioned above but of a local flavor as well. We can all appreciate a good stretch of pavement. Garner finds itself not only on Interstate 40 but also US Highway 70. This location allows you to get to downtown Raleigh in literally five minutes, add a minute to the campus of North Carolina State or 20 minutes to the regional airport. You’re 30 minutes away from the Duke campus in Durham or the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Finally, the spark that started the fire is the Research Triangle Park which is also only 25 minutes from Garner.

That same notion of location played a huge role in the origination of Garner. Around 1857 the new rail line between Charlotte and Goldsboro needed a water and wood stop for the steam engines. And that was the beginning. A post office was added to the small town in 1878 and an actual railroad depot was built in 1905. The town was also incorporated at that time. The town continued to grow with the additions of a carpenter and cabinetmaker, a blacksmith, barber shops, a granary, a drug store, repair shops, livery stables and boarding houses. Farming was the primary supporting industry with cotton being the number one crop. In 1910 Highway 70 became the first paved highway in the entire state.

In 1959 the local and state governments collaborated on a huge project, called the Research Triangle Park. With three premiere universities in the immediate area they were watching new graduates continue to leave the area altogether and their objective was to stop that “brain drain”. The project was incredibly successful! Today the Park features over 200 businesses and over 50,000 highly educated employees. All needing homes in the area. This influx has grown Garner today to a population of close to 30,000 residents. The city has done a very good job controlling that growth, planning the growth, yet maintaining its small town charm. Garner has received the honor of being a Top 10 All American City by the National Civic League for its civic accomplishments. It has all the features and municipal necessities of a small city of this size but don’t forget, you’re only a cup of coffee away from the state capital, Raleigh as well as Durham and Chapel Hill. You can find something different to do any given night of the week.

To push out that entertainment circle, you can jump in the car and spend a nice weekend on the Atlantic coast, which is only a few hours away, or throw the luggage into the trunk a second weekend and go exploring in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, only a few hour drive to the west. Location, location, location!
