More Information on Cosmetic Dentistry

We all want to have the best smile possible. For some people, though, there is an issue standing in between their perfect smile and them. This may be yellow teeth, a “gummy smile,” a chipped tooth or a variety of other cosmetic issues. For these problems and more, cosmetic dentistry may be the right solution.

What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is the field of dentistry that includes any services that improve the cosmetic appearance of a patient’s teeth and/or gums. While some of these services are purely aesthetic, other services may actually significantly boost the oral health of a patient.

Why Cosmetic Dentistry?

There are a variety of different reasons why a patient may want to undergo a cosmetic procedure. For some, it’s simply a matter of self confidence. By repairing a chipped tooth or whitening yellow teeth, the patient may notice a boost in confidence. A patient may also need to have a tooth repaired for functional reasons. For instance, a patient may have a broken tooth that is causing them pain and making it difficult to chew. Repairing this tooth will help to not only improve the appearance of the tooth, but also will remove the pain and discomfort experienced when biting and chewing.

Cosmetic Dentistry Services

Cosmetic dentistry is a catchall term that refers to any procedure that improves the cosmetic appearance of a patient’s teeth and/or gums. Because of this, there are actually a variety of different services that fall under the label “cosmetic dentistry.” Some of these include:

Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is an extremely popular cosmetic service, as it allows the patient to improve the overall color and shade of their teeth. While teeth whitening can be extremely effective, it also can be damaging to a patient’s teeth if their enamel is not strong enough to handle the whitening procedure. Your dentist will take a look at the enamel of your teeth, and will let you know if you are a candidate.

Gum Contouring

While a “gummy smile” may not be causing any major oral health issues, for some patients it can be a cause of self-consciousness. Gum contouring involves the reshaping of the gums to create an even gumline that exposes more of the teeth—improving the appearance of a patient’s smile.

Dental Veneers

If a tooth is cracked, decayed, chipped, broken or otherwise damaged, a portion of that tooth may need to be replaced. Dental veneers are an excellent replacement option for teeth that have been damaged severely enough that dental bonding is not an option, but not severely enough that dental crowns are needed.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a dental prosthetic that replaces the crown of a tooth that has been severely damaged. Dental crowns allow for greater functionality, a stronger bite and a better aesthetic appearance.
