A silver amalgam filling was traditionally used to repair a tooth affected by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. The decayed or affected portion of the tooth would be removed and then filled with a silver filling. With today's advances in composite (also called resin), filling material, the same repair can often be made much more conservatively and match the color of the patient's teeth. At Wake Dental Care, we place only composite fillings, as they are more conservative, and can preserve more tooth structure.
As with most dental restorations, amalgam fillings are not permanent and may someday need replacement. They are very durable, and will last many years, giving you a long lasting smile.
